A so-called fossil fuel, petroleum is believed by most scientists to be the transformed remains of long dead organisms. The majority of petroleum is thought to come from the fossils of plants and tiny marine organisms. Larger animals might contribute to the mix as well. Rocks that contain a lot of organic carbon get buried deeply, and the heat and pressure coos that carbon into crude oil. One example is coals. Coals are formed from old swamps, usually by the coast where seawater can flood in. Leaf material falls into the water and is preserved. Over time, this gets buried deeper and deeper. As these sediment layers dried, chemicals from the water formed natural cements to bind the sediment grains into hard rocks.
